The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique code assigned to the assets. It is a unique combination of 17 characters (digits and letters) with each character or series of characters representing a unique information about the asset such as specifications (brand, engine size, and type), manufacturer, model, serial number, and security code. Using the VIN number, you can easily identify the asset and also track the activities such as warranty claims, repairs, and services carried out on the asset.
The VIN Decoder is an add-on viewable within the Create Assets page that lets you verify and extract the VIN details of the asset from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) service before creating an asset in FASTER Web.
Note: To use the VIN Decoder function in FASTER Web, you must: · Purchase VIN Decoder as an add-on to the FASTER Web application. · Have required role-based permission. The FASTER Web application server must have internet access if you are using the VIN Decoder or Asset Location features. The server will need to access to the following: o NHTSA website to get VIN information o OpenStreetMap website to provide mapping You can also automatically check the existence of VIN in FASTER Web by scanning the VIN from any location or module of FASTER Web using the barcode scanner. The barcode scanner validates the length of the VIN and if it is of 17 character (digits and letters), one of the following occurs: · If the VIN exists in FASTER Web, the Assets > Create Assets page is displayed. · If the VIN does not exists in FASTER Web, the Assets > Create Assets page is displayed. FASTER Web decodes and displays the VIN details. You can not scan VIN from the following locations or modules of FASTER Web: · Inventory module · Dialog box of all the modules · Setup > Application Setup > Fuel > Settings > Manual Entry & Fuel Import Settings > Fuel Vendor Mapping · Maintenance module > Search Issued Item > Advanced Search Options - Item Issue · Reports module · FASTER Web In Product Help Scanning VIN is independent of any barcode device and does not require any hardware configuration. |
To view the VIN Decoder section, click the VIN Decoder link.
1. Click the Assets module.
2. In the Actions section, click Create Assets.
The Create Assets page opens.
3. In the VIN box under the VIN Decoder section, type the VIN of the asset.
4. Click the Check VIN link.
o If the VIN specified is not of 17 characters, an error message VIN must be of 17 characters in length. Please try again is displayed.
o If the VIN is present in FASTER Web, the Select Asset page is displayed wherein you can click the View Details button to view the basic details of the asset. You can also search the existing work orders created for that asset, and also create new work order or direct charge for that asset.
o If the VIN is not found in FASTER Web, FASTER Web tries to makes a connection to the NHTSA database and one of the following occurs:
§ If FASTER Web can not connect to the NHTSA service, an error message FASTER Web could not connect to the NHTSA database. Please confirm you are connected to the internet and that the VIN Decoder is configured properly is displayed.
§ If FASTER Web connects to the NHTSA service, the VIN is verified.
If the VIN is valid, the details of the asset is displayed in the VIN Decoder section. You can create an asset with these details.
If the VIN is in invalid format or not registered with NHTSA, an error message The VIN does not match any Asset VIN currently in FASTER Web and could not be found in the NHTSA database. You can rescan the VIN and try again or you can still create an asset but some fields will not be automatically populated is displayed. You can still create an asset in FASTER Web.
5. After the VIN details are verified, create an asset from scratch, template, or from an acquisition plan.
